Llandovery grew up as a drovers’ town at the head of the Tywi valley, where herdsmen once gathered cattle to walk them the long road to the markets of London. A small castle ruin stands on a mound beside the livestock market, with a striking stainless-steel statue of the rebel Llywelyn ap Gruffudd Fychan next to it. It makes a handy base for the western Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian hills, and the station is just west of the centre.
