Dolaucothi is the only known Roman gold mine in Britain — the Romans drove adits into the hillside here nearly two thousand years ago. The National Trust has run the site since 1941, offering underground guided tours with lamps and helmets, plus gold panning above ground, near Pumsaint. It’s a paid attraction; Llanwrda station is about 11km to the south-east.
