The hymn-writer William Williams Pantycelyn is buried in the churchyard here, on the hill above Llandovery. He died in 1791, and his best-known hymn — “Arglwydd, arwain trwy’r anialwch”, sung in English as “Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer” to the tune Cwm Rhondda — is still belted out at Welsh rugby matches and chapels alike. The church stands a little apart from the town, on what was an early religious site. Llandovery station is only about half a kilometre away.
