Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, bought Upton in 1927 and filled it with one of the finest private art collections of the century, on Shell oil money, with paintings by Bosch, El Greco and Stubbs still hung inside. Behind the house the ground drops away in terraces laid out for the family in the 1920s and 30s, falling to a lake and a kitchen garden. National Trust, set high near Edgehill.
