Britain’s oldest botanic garden, laid out in 1621 as a physic garden for growing medicinal plants, and still working the same walled ground beside the River Cherwell. Henry Danvers, Earl of Danby, put up the money. It’s under five acres but densely planted — over 5,000 species, from the walled beds to a run of glasshouses. Open daily and ticketed, a short walk from the city centre and about 1.5km from Oxford station.
