The Danish architect Arne Jacobsen designed St Catherine’s College down to the last detail in the early 1960s — building, furniture, cutlery and this garden alike, right down to choosing which fish would live in the ponds. It’s a rare thing: a modernist landscape as carefully composed as the architecture around it, with a water garden, an amphitheatre and a music house set among clipped hedges above the River Cherwell. The grounds are open to visitors, free, dawn to dusk, a short walk from Oxford’s Carfax Tower.
