Among the most complete Norman churches in England, St Mary’s shows a west front crowded with 12th-century carving — orders of beakheads and bands of zigzag around the doorways, the work finished around 1160. It sits above the Thames at Iffley, now on Oxford’s southern edge, and is free to look round. Oxford station is about 2.5km to the north-west.
