Carfax Tower stands at the central crossroads of Oxford, all that survives of St Martin’s church after the rest was pulled down in 1896 to ease the traffic. It dates from the 12th century, and a climb of 99 steps brings you out on a parapet with a view over the college roofs and spires. Paid entry. Oxford station is about 800 metres to the west.
