Bartholomew Gosnold sailed from Otley in 1602, named Martha’s Vineyard after his daughter, and went on to help found Jamestown in 1607. His family’s home is a Grade I moated hall of the 15th century, ringed by ten acres of gardens — an H-shaped canal, orchards and a knot garden among them. Open on set days through summer, with a garden café; paid entry.
