Shrubland Hall rises on a chalk escarpment above the Gipping, an Italianate villa whose terraced gardens Sir Charles Barry cut into the slope in the 1850s, their grand staircase modelled on the Villa d’Este at Tivoli. Long rated among Suffolk’s finest gardens, the estate is now privately owned, split between several hands, and no longer regularly open — worth knowing before a trip. It lies near Coddenham, west of Ipswich.
