Below the walls of Framlingham Castle, St Michael’s became the burial church of the Howard dukes of Norfolk after their mausoleum at Thetford Priory was dissolved. The chancel, finished in 1554, holds their elaborate Renaissance tombs, among them Henry Fitzroy — Henry VIII’s illegitimate son — and the poet Earl of Surrey. In the middle of Framlingham; open access.
