Colonel Harry Clive began this hillside garden in 1940 as a set of walks for his wife Dorothy, who had Parkinson’s disease and could no longer manage the wider grounds. Laid out on the Staffordshire–Shropshire border across about 12 acres, it grew from a disused sandstone quarry, now a shaded dell with a waterfall and streamside planting. Come in June for the long laburnum arch; spring brings rhododendrons and azaleas, and there’s an alpine scree for close looking. Paid entry, run by a charitable trust.
