Three eras of design sit side by side at Trentham. Capability Brown shaped the mile-long serpentine lake in the 1750s; Sir Charles Barry added the grand Italian Gardens beside it in 1840, all terraces, balustrades and clipped topiary; and more recently Piet Oudolf planted his Rivers of Grass and a floral labyrinth, tens of thousands of perennials running in loose drifts towards the Trent. It makes for a long, varied walk on the edge of Stoke. Wedgwood station is a little over 2km to the south-east.
