Jesse Shirley’s bone and flint mill, built in 1857 at the junction of the Trent & Mersey and Caldon canals, is the last steam-powered potters’ mill in Britain. A beam engine drives ten grinding pans that once milled flint, bone and Cornish stone into the raw materials for bone china; the family ran it as a business until 1975. The mill is fired up on regular steaming days, when the engine turns for visitors. Entry is free, and Stoke-on-Trent station is about 1.5km away.
