Croome was ‘Capability’ Brown’s first complete landscape, the job that made his name. From 1751 he drained the marshy park for the 6th Earl of Coventry, dug a serpentine river and lake, moved the village out of view and built a new Gothic church on the hill above. Robert Adam had a hand in the mansion and its garden buildings. It’s now National Trust, with the walled garden restored and miles of parkland to walk; there’s a charge for non-members. Worcestershire Parkway station is around 6km north.
