Upton is a small riverside town on the Severn, its quays once busy with barge trade. The landmark ‘Pepperpot’ — a hexagonal lantern topped with a copper cupola — is the fourteenth-century tower of a long-gone parish church, now a heritage centre. The town fills up for its summer festivals, chief among them a jazz weekend at the end of June. Hanley Swan lies a short way to the east.
