Burnby Hall Gardens at Pocklington are built round two lakes that Major Percy Stewart originally dug for fishing. Today they hold the national collection of hardy water lilies — the largest planted in a natural setting anywhere in Europe — at their best in high summer when the flowers are open. Beyond the lakes are rockeries and quiet woodland walks. Paid entry and seasonal opening; well worth timing your visit for the lilies.
