Aldby Park is a small Georgian mansion built around 1726 above the River Derwent at Buttercrambe, on a site with a claim to real antiquity — tradition holds it’s where Edwin of Northumbria was crowned king in 625. The garden below the house keeps six early terraces cut into the hillside, laid out in the 1740s around the remains of a medieval motte. It isn’t open generally; visits happen through occasional guided tours arranged via Historic Houses, covering the house, garden, church and a small hydro-electric scheme on the river. The Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought a couple of miles to the south in 1066.
