Castle Howard is a baroque stately home in the Howardian Hills, the first building designed by playwright-turned-architect John Vanbrugh, begun in 1699 for the Howard family, who still live here. It became famous on screen as Brideshead, filmed here for both the 1981 TV series and the 2008 film of Brideshead Revisited. The grounds run to temples and a domed mausoleum beside two lakes. House and gardens open March to October with a paid ticket. Kirkham Priory, ruined and riverside, is a short drive south.
