Several of Harome’s 17th-century cottages, among them Mill Cottage, Orchard House and The Hollies, are built round crucks, pairs of big curved timbers that run from the ground to the roof ridge, and still have thatched roofs. Another cruck house from the village, the Manor House, now stands at the Ryedale Folk Museum. St Saviour’s church went up in 1862 to designs by Charles Barry Junior, son of the architect of the Houses of Parliament. The thatched Star Inn, rebuilt after fire destroyed its roof in November 2021, holds a Michelin star, so book well ahead. Helmsley is 2 miles north-west.
