Rievaulx is a scatter of houses in the wooded Rye valley, much of it built from the stone of its own dissolved abbey — whose soaring ruins are the reason to come. Up on the hillside above, the National Trust’s Rievaulx Terrace gives the classic view down over the abbey from a curving grassy walk. It’s an easy walk or short drive from Helmsley. There’s no station nearby, so you’ll need a car.
