Rievaulx Terrace is a long, curving grass terrace laid out in 1758 by Thomas Duncombe III, high on the wooded bank above Rievaulx Abbey. A domed Tuscan temple stands at one end and an Ionic banqueting house at the other, and as you walk between them the trees open in turn onto framed views down to the abbey ruins. Now looked after by the National Trust; paid entry. Thirsk is the nearest station, around 17km west.
