A heated open-air pool blasted out of a sandstone hillside on the edge of Helmsley in 1969, now run by a village charity
Open to visitorsheated late May to early September, cooler autumn sessions after — book online before you go
Workers used dynamite to cut the basin of this pool out of a sandstone hillside at Baxton’s Sprunt, on the edge of Helmsley in the North York Moors National Park. The Feversham Memorial Trust built the pool as a memorial to the 3rd Earl of Feversham, to a design by the architect Sir Martyn Beckett, and the Duke of Norfolk opened it in August 1969. The pool bills itself as Yorkshire’s only heated 25-metre open-air pool, and it was completely re-tiled in a refurbishment over the winter of 2018–19. A volunteer charity runs the pool now. The heated season runs from late May to early September, followed by cooler autumn “Cool Pool” sessions with a new cedar sauna for warming up, all booked online. Helmsley Castle is under a kilometre to the south.
