Above the door of St Gregory’s Minster, in a quiet dale near Kirkbymoorside, sits one of the finest Anglo-Saxon sundials in England. Its inscription records that Orm Gamalson bought the church “when it was all broken down and fallen” and had it rebuilt around 1055-65, in the days of Edward the Confessor and Earl Tostig. The little Saxon church behind it is just as unshowy and remote. Open access and free; Malton is the nearest station, about 18km to the south-east.
