St Mary’s at Lastingham keeps one of England’s most remarkable church crypts — a low, complete Norman vault with its own aisles and apse, built over the grave of St Cedd, who founded a monastery here in the 7th century. The village itself is a quiet huddle of stone below the moor. It’s a short hop from Hutton-le-Hole; the nearest trains are at Glaisdale, some way north over the tops.
