Rosedale Chimney Bank is one of the steepest public roads in England, dropping into Rosedale Abbey at gradients of around 1 in 3. It’s a notorious test for cyclists and a white-knuckle descent by car — caravans are banned outright. Near the top stand the ruined ironstone calcining kilns, left from the valley’s mining days. Worth the climb for the moor-top views before you tip over the edge.
