The Blacksmiths Arms faces St Mary’s church across the green at Lastingham, whose Norman crypt — built over the grave of St Cedd — is reckoned the only complete one of its kind in the country. The pub is a 17th-century dining spot known for a generous Sunday roast, open for lunch and dinner with pizzas in the garden come summer.
