Rosedale Abbey sits around a green in a quiet dale, with only fragments left of the priory that gave it the name. The moors above carry the scars of a booming 19th-century ironstone industry — spoil heaps, ruined kiln arches and the trackbed of the old mineral railway make for atmospheric walking. It’s a peaceful base off the beaten track. Lastingham and Hutton-le-Hole lie over the moor to the east.
