St Mary’s at Lastingham stands over one of the most remarkable crypts in England, built by Benedictine monks from Whitby in 1078 and the only one in the country to have a nave and apse of its own. It marks the spot where St Cedd founded a monastery in 654 and was buried a decade later. The village is a peaceful stop on the southern edge of the moors; the church is open and free to look round.
