A red-roofed fishing town piled up both sides of the Esk, with the abbey ruins and the 199 Steps on the East Cliff above.
Whitby packs red-roofed cottages up both sides of a working harbour, with the ruined abbey and St Mary’s Church on the clifftop reached by the famous 199 steps. Bram Stoker set part of Dracula here, and Captain Cook learned his trade on the town’s collier ships — his Endeavour was Whitby-built. Come for the kippers and the fish and chips, and browse the shops selling local jet. The station is right by the harbour.
