Hawnby is a tiny hillside village above the River Rye, its cottages set in two rows on a steep bank. It sits deep in walking country on the quieter western moors, with the Cleveland Way and the high tops close at hand, and little more than a church, an inn and gorgeous views down the dale. Thirsk is the nearest station, well to the south-west, so come by car.
