England's most northerly hill horse, cut on the face of Sutton Bank in 1857 — and dressed with pale chippings, since there's no chalk here.

Cut in 1857 by a local schoolmaster, John Hodgson, and villagers, this is the most northerly of England’s hill horses. The rock beneath it is limestone rather than chalk, so it has to be whitened with crushed stone to show at all. You view it from below, off the A170: follow signs for the Yorkshire Gliding Club to the car park under the scarp, where steps climb towards the figure. It sits on the western edge of the North York Moors, under the escarpment of Sutton Bank.
