Laurence Sterne was curate at Coxwold when he wrote much of Tristram Shandy at this house, which he renamed Shandy Hall. Its core is a medieval timber hall of around 1430, added to over the centuries and now cared for by a trust, with quirky walled gardens out the back. The house and gardens open seasonally and to paid entry, so check the days before setting off. The village itself is worth a wander too.
