A wool merchant named Richard Alwyn built Ayscoughfee Hall in 1451, and it survives as one of the best medieval timber-framed merchant’s houses in England, its Gothic frontage a later Victorian dress. The five acres in front hold a yew walk planted in the 1720s, tall clipped hedges, an old ice-house and an ornamental lake. Museum and gardens are free, set in the middle of Spalding beside the church of St Mary and St Nicolas.
