Spalding grew rich on the Welland and its tulip fields, and St Mary and St Nicolas stands near the waterfront as the medieval mark of that wealth. Begun around 1284 by the town’s Benedictine priory, it has an unusual double-aisled nave — two aisles deep on each side — and a detached tower carrying a crocketed spire that leans noticeably to the north-east. The tulip displays at Springfields are a short way off. Open to visitors.
