Margam Abbey was founded in 1147 by Robert, Earl of Gloucester, as a Cistercian house colonised from Clairvaux. When the monastery fell at the Dissolution its nave survived as the parish church of St Mary, which is still in use today. The ruined twelve-sided chapter house and the wider estate lie next door at Margam Country Park. Pyle station is about 4km to the south-east.
