Thatched cottages line the lane at Merthyr Mawr, behind one of the largest dune systems in Britain. The sands hide the ruins of Candleston Castle and stood in for Arabia in David Lean’s 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. Stepping stones cross the river towards Ogmore-by-Sea and its castle. Bridgend station is about 4km northeast.
