Dunraven Bay — often called Southerndown beach — sits below layered lias cliffs on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, its sand and rock pools giving way to fossils in the shale. There’s a car park and a Heritage Coast centre at the back of the beach, and the walled gardens of the vanished Dunraven Castle lie on the headland above. The sea comes in fast over the flat sand, so watch the tide. Doctor Who fans know it as Bad Wolf Bay.
