This is the site of St Illtud’s monastery, founded around AD 500 and one of the earliest centres of learning in Britain. The long, low building is really two churches joined end to end, and its Galilee Chapel holds the finest collection of early Celtic crosses in Wales outside the National Museum, carved between the 9th and 11th centuries. Open to visitors, and just up from Llantwit Major station.
