St Illtud founded a monastic school here around the end of the 5th century, and Llantwit Major (Llanilltud Fawr) claims to be Britain’s earliest centre of learning. The church of St Illtud keeps a remarkable set of early Celtic carved stones. Below the town, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast runs down to a pebble-and-sand beach. The station is in the town.
