The dunes behind Merthyr Mawr rise into the Big Dipper, reckoned the second-highest sand dune in Europe at around 60 metres. The warren spreads over sand blown against a limestone ridge, hiding the ruined Candleston Castle at its edge, and the desert-like scale drew the makers of Lawrence of Arabia here to film. The dunes are reached on foot from Merthyr Mawr village.
