Coombes has no real village to speak of, just a tiny whitewashed church tucked into a fold of the Downs above the Adur. Inside are lively 12th-century wall paintings by the so-called Lewes Group, the same workshop behind those at Clayton and Hardham. Open limited hours, so it pays to check before setting out. Lancing station is about 4km to the south.
