The home of golf.
St Andrews is Scotland’s oldest university town — founded around 1413 — and the worldwide home of golf. The Old Course runs right up to the edge of town, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754, still has its clubhouse behind the first tee. There’s plenty else besides: the gaunt ruins of the cathedral and clifftop castle, and two long sandy beaches, including the West Sands of Chariots of Fire fame. Leuchars, the nearest station, is about 7km away, with buses on into town.
