West Sands is the two-mile run of beach beside the Old Course at St Andrews — the very stretch where the runners pound along the sand in the opening scene of Chariots of Fire. It’s broad, flat and bracing, popular with walkers, dog-walkers and kite-flyers. There’s parking along the front, and it’s an easy walk from the town centre. Leuchars station is about 7km away.
