Broughty Ferry is a genteel former fishing village on the Tay, now an eastern suburb of Dundee and often called the jewel in its crown. There’s a good beach beside the old castle, a cluster of independent shops and pubs, and grand villas built by the city’s Victorian jute barons — St Luke’s Church among the fine buildings they left. Its own station puts it a few minutes by train from central Dundee.
