Market Harborough grew up where the old London road crosses the Welland, and it kept the look of a prosperous coaching town, with a wide market street of Georgian brick and the old grammar school of 1614 raised on wooden posts so the butter market could shelter beneath. Beside it the medieval church of St Dionysius carries a tall broach spire and, unusually for a town church, has no graveyard. The station is a short walk east of the centre.
