Alexander Selkirk, the sailor marooned for four years on a Pacific island and the model for Robinson Crusoe, was born in Lower Largo in 1676. A statue of him in his goatskins, scanning the horizon, stands on Main Street on the site of his birthplace. The village itself is a single row of cottages along a tidal burn, with The Crusoe Hotel on the harbourfront. Leven station is about 5km west.
