Godalming is a former wool town on the River Wey, with a small pillared market hall known as the Pepperpot and timber-framed frontages along its streets. In 1881 it became the first town in the world with a public electricity supply, powered by a waterwheel on the Wey. Its church has a tall lead spire on Saxon foundations. Godalming station is on the Portsmouth line from Waterloo.
