Munstead Wood was Gertrude Jekyll’s own garden, bought as bare Surrey heathland in 1882, where she worked out her colour-graded borders around a house a young Edwin Lutyens designed for her — his first big commission, finished in 1896. The National Trust took it on recently and, for now, opens it only for pre-booked tours rather than general visiting, so book ahead. It sits at Busbridge, just outside Godalming. Godalming station is about 2km north-west.
