If you like a garden with real horticultural pedigree, Vann is worth timing a visit around. It’s a five-acre garden of linked “rooms” around a 16th-century family home near Chiddingfold, with a water garden laid out by Gertrude Jekyll in 1911 and a stone pergola by the Arts and Crafts architect W.D. Caröe. The Caröe family still lives here and has done since 1908, and the garden only opens on set days — a week-long National Garden Scheme opening each spring, then Wednesdays through into summer. Bring cash; cards aren’t taken on the gate. Chiddingfold is a couple of kilometres south-west.
